Alright, let's be honest here, this is not going to be a post about smelling my feet - but I hope it grabbed your attention! This is, however, a post about FEET! Anyone who has taken a yoga class with me knows that I always like to spend, at least, a little bit of time giving our feet some extra attention. The reason being that our feet seem to be an underestimated part of our bodies and they really have a lot to do with other ailments/injuries that we might experience. Think about those carefree days as a child when you were barefoot, in socks, or in comfortable shoes most of the time. This was so good for your feet and your body! As adults, whether you are male or female, our feet spend a lot of time cramped into less than ideal footwear. Over time our adult feet show signs of distress: bunions, corns and calluses, gout, plantar warts, athlete's foot, nail infections, hammertoe, ingrown toenails, or flatfoot, just to name a few. Our feet are the foundation for our body. If they are not well cared for over time we develop problems with our knees, hips, spine, shoulders, and/or neck. Let's get a little more technical. According to HealthCommunities.com, "The human foot combines mechanical complexity and structural strength. The ankle serves as foundation, shock absorber and propulsion engine. The foot can sustain enormous pressure (several tons over the course of a one-mile run) and provides flexibility and resiliency. The foot and ankle contain:
"These components work together to provide the body with support, balance, and mobility. A structural flaw or malfunction in any one part can result in the development of problems elsewhere in the body (such as back pain). Abnormalities in other parts of the body can lead to problems in the feet."
So, you see, it's time to start taking better care of our feet and giving them a bit more attention. Stay tuned for the next FEET blog post where I will share suggestions for giving them that extra care and attention! Post by Om-Mama Yoga. I love teaching yoga!
